A few days back Cassie posted on her blog about her favourite background music for writing. http://wp.me/phBnT-L3 It was interesting to see what other writers find their groove to. Alas, silence for me is still worth its weight in wordcount.
So here’s a different angle… What is your writing theme song? This is an easy one for me. Without a doubt, its the song below. (Now… this is the first time I’m attempting to embed a video and I’m hoping it’s as simple as they say. Time will tell. )

It is so beautifully spot on for us writers. Check this out…
I am unwritten, can’t read my mind, I’m undefined
I’m just beginning, the pen’s in my hand, ending unplanned
Staring at the blank page before you
Open up the dirty window
Let the sun (Son!) illuminate the words that you could not find
Reaching for something in the distance
So close you can almost taste it
Release your inhibitions
Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins
The rest is still unwritten….
Nice, hey?
What is your writing theme song?
Thanks for sharing. I’m going to check that out now.
Hi Cassie, thanks for popping in. 🙂
Really inspiring blog. Never thought about having a writing theme song but now I will. I guess I could say that my writing theme song would be Vultures by John Mayer. The lyrics are usually just enough to pick me up when self doubt spurns into self doubt. Plus he’s a monster on guitar!
Thanks Michelle. 🙂 Interesting song – vultures. All the best with your writing this year.
Just beautiful! Right about now that rain sounds perfect.
🙂
Blues or country music. I write songs in the country genre, so the rhythm of the music sets me to a’writin’ sometimes.
But then..for serious novella work or screenplays, I prefer classical. Vivaldi, Llzst. Copeland.
So Jim, do you actually write with music on in the background? I get so distracted if I have music playing. I think my problem is that I am also a dancer, so music gets my brain going in a whole different way to what is required for writing. I just play it safe in write with quiet! haha
I’f I’m in poetry mode, there’s usually no music playing. The poetry thing hits me like a flash of inspiration, and I just start typing or frantically scribbling on whatever’s handy.
If I’m screenwriting or working on a blog or a story, the music is always on.
That is interesting. Though I guess it makes sense …poetry has a rhythm to it… which shouldn’t be disturbed by external music maybe? I think at this busy stage of my life, I have the attention span of a toddler… almost anything distracts me. 🙂
